Deon Theron is one of those people I’ve only met recently, and he is one of those surprise packages of artists who never studied at art school! That is very strange!  How can a person who didn’t go to an art school make such accomplished work? Why does he even make art? So I asked him.
“Because I must! Because it’s my passion” he said.

Well ladies and gentlemen, I couldn’t have wished for a more perfect answer.
Passion is the one overriding factor that I come across in everyone who achieves spectacular things.
The way Deon began his art career is quite unique too…after all,  he studied music  and is a accomplished concert pianist, and he still teaches piano and clarinet. But one day he was watching a friend make a little watercolour sketch, and he was fascinated! THAT was the bait and Deon was hooked. We can all be grateful to that friend because the very next day Deon started painting.

He began with watercolours and went on to acrylics. Which he still uses in a fluid, lyrical way: building up subtle colours to make a fleeting, atmospheric impression. The best word I can find to describe both Deon and Deon’s work is: “Gentle”. There is nothing harsh or jarring in the images, nothing confrontational, even though the subject may be a full frontal of a herd of buffalo.

Caressing colours blend beautifully together to make images which seem to shimmer and twinkle. As a drawer myself I know just how difficult it is to create atmosphere! (I wont even attempt it in a painting). Drawing by it’s very nature will produce lines, which become the edges of planes or objects. Deon’s paintings have very few edges, the soft image of one flower or flamingo flows into the next: the transition is seamless and smooth, and yet the amazing thing about Deon’s work is that his paintings never loose it’s clarity or drama! There is a power that thrusts itself at you from each work. Power, balanced with grace.

This is hard to achieve, and can only be done with discipline and commitment! The end result is a sumptuous collection of beautiful images, impeccably and tastefully framed, that can comfortably be the center piece in any room.
